I have often wondered why people that call themselves good Christians find fault in anyone who cares to disagree with any part of their faith. I myself am a Christian, but I try not to push it onto other people. I decided to write a post on this after a discussion with 6mile and NK about religious tolerance. If I remembered exactly WHERE the conversation was on the blog..I would link it. If I find it, I will do so at a later time.
I don’t exactly fit the “ideals” most Christians believe in. First of all, I believe that there was never meant to be a physical temple/building, but a temple within ourselves, that you are supposed to be one-on-one with God. I believe in an ultimate superior being, but with 2 faces… one of man and one of woman. Why not? God said he made us in his likeness..so doesn’t it seem logical that he could actually HAVE 2 faces. I see him as our stern, but gentle father..and our loving, caring mother. I know that kind of flies in the face of Christianity, but it IS what I believe to my innermost sanctum.
I have friends of mulitple different religions. They don’t seem to ever try and push their religious ideals on me, yet I know multiple Christians who have. They push for religious understanding and tolerance, yet they severly criticize anyone who doesn’t fit their exact ideals. The Bible says, “not to judge others, lest ye be judged yeself.” For people that are so “religious,” they sure act high and mighty. These people annoy me to the utmost degree. I especially don’t like those that preach that if I do or don’t do certain things, I am going to Hell. I don’t really think they are in a position to make that decision. As far as I am concerned, only one being can decide that…and it isn’t them. This may sound cynical and judgemental on my part, but I cannot help how I feel about how I and others have been treated.
Someone once told me that I am more like a Buddist/Hindu-Christian combo than anything. This was from a man of Buddist religion that is married to a Christian lady. I believe in karma. I believe that what goes around, comes around; that if you do evil, it will come back on you 3-fold. I believe in spirit guides, and totem-like animals. Mine happens to be a dove..which sometimes shows with another friend. I feel like they are there watching over me, that God sent them to do so. People don’t normally find doves wherever they go..but strangely enough, I seem to be followed by this one. I can’t help it, it’s part of who I am…
I have a strong Native American heritage. We believe most living things have a spirit..and that is how I feel. I have inherited the ability to sometimes see things before they happen..usually in my dreams. It is a gift and a curse. A gift of sight..but a lot of times with no way to fix the inevitable. That being said, I will say..nothing is set in stone. We all have a plan set up with God, but we also have multiple choices, with many different outcomes. Because of this ability, I have also been called a witch, and not in a good way. How can something that was given to you from God make you automatically anti-Christian? It can’t..it is just people pushing their views and ideas onto someone when they don’t understand what is happening. People always try to find a way to comprehend things they don’t understand..and not always in the best of ways. My great, great grandmother was a medicine woman. That didn’t mean she wasn’t a Christian though. I also see spirits, and I am okay with that. Not everyone does…and if you don’t believe in them, you won’t see them. That being said, that doesn’t mean you haven’t had some sort of supernatural experience yourself.
Another thing is, I believe that most religions are interlinked. How you may ask? How many people have actually gone and tried to understand the differences between the different religions? By no means am I an expert. Most people do not know that the Bible was in fact written by man. That it is supposed to be God’s words interpretted as the person was given it. I have no major problem with that except that man is obviously flawed and prejudiced. I believe if I remember correctly, it was the Emperor Constantine that called together a meeting and had a session to vote what books were actually to go into the official Bible as we know it today. That means MANY books were left out. Most of these had to do with how there are not supposed to be physical temples, and that women WERE created to be equals with man. At the time, that would have lessened the power of the male-dominated Christian church. They wanted people to be taught subserviance..so I feel things were changed to say what those in that session wanted..not really completely what GOD wanted said.
Also, many Pagan rituals/holidays were incorporated into the Christian faith. Such as the Holy Trinity. Pagans believed in the face of God as the Goddess as well, if I remember correctly. Also, their Holy Trinity was also known as the maiden, the mother and the crone… this was changed to the Trinity of the Father, the Mother, the Child and into today’s the Father, the Spirit and the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is by tradition a woman, but that is not widely spread by the churches. Want more info, here’s a website about it. http://www.northernway.org/twm/mary/trinity.html . I was also recently educated that Hinduism also has a Trinity of sorts known as Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Hindus also, to the best of my knowledge, believe in an ultimate superior being as well, with the 3 above as different aspects or faces of the one ultimate God. The following website explains some of the differences between Christianity and Hinduism http://www.religion-cults.com/Eastern/Hinduism/hindu4.htm .
Equinoxes and Solsticies were also celebrated by the Pagans. No one knows when Jesus was exactly born, but to try to move into a more Christian-based era…the winter solstice was moved into the holiday Christmas..the Yuletide. Yet, this is all based on ANOTHER Pagan holiday. The following website explains this in great detail…alot better job than I could ever attempt to accomplish. http://www.unhinderedliving.com/yule.html . And by the way, most traditional wedding songs are of Pagan origin. I know this because if you are Catholic, they will not allow them to be played at your wedding, as a friend of mine was recently educated about.
I didn’t say really anything about Muslims or Jews. They believe in the Bible up until the New Testament, and have their own set of beliefs, but I am still educating myself on those. But, from what I have seen, true Muslims are willing to be tolerant, it is the radical ones we always hear about. What does this mean? You shouldn’t judge others until you know the REAL person..or how about just don’t judge them at all.
Another website that helps with explaining the differences and similarities between religions is http://www.religioustolerance.org/winter_solstice.htm . Hopefully, more people will become open-minded and tolerant. That is what life is really all about.

Ara, this is a great post. The basic problem I have is with Christian fundamentalism…it is…well…pretty special. Even Isalmic fundamentalists (I THINK) suggests that salvation is possible for non-Muslims. Usually Christian fundamentalists are protestant and boast the authority to interpret the Bible thereby giving them a direct and personal relationship with God. This God watches your every move, sometimes gives you special direction, and so forth. Also, in the Christian tradition salvation is not earned…rather given by God’s grace.
The more eastern faiths (Hinduism, Buddism) believe in sort of a bigger, more removed source that sort of puts the cosmos in motion and then it’s up to US to save ourselves. This type of god(s) is not intertwined with our daily life but it is more a cosmic force. In the case of Hinduism, it brings goodness based on our ACTIONS and DEEDS. Or, as you said karma.
I like the idea of karma because it basically seems more realistic and certainly more aligned with the laws of physics. Also, I like that you cannot erase your deeds with confessions or simply with “gods grace.” What you put in the hopper of life is what you are going to get out. This maximizes the responsilbity of the individual to take control of his or her destiny.
Plus, like I said, Christian fundamentalism is a very young sort of religious framework and leaves much to be desired in the way of a muscular theology and intellectual history. I had an aunt try to Save me once…as I reflect on it it’s probably one of the most disrespectful things any one has ever done to me. All that Saving and Christian fundamentalism is so closely linked with colonial, pushy ideas of “I know the answers, my way is the best way…etc…” That’s extremely dangerous territory…
I’m never going to finish my master’s project with these blogs!!!
LOL, sorry about the distraction from the master’s project. Thanks for the complements on the post. Sometimes it takes me a while to put the words I want to express into written form. I totally agree with Christian fundamentalism being dangerous territory. You are very right.
I have 2 different cousins that are preachers. One, I’ll call DV, is the most honest, caring, truly genuine person I have ever met. He simply believes in God and doesn’t push anyone to be more than they can be. He doesn’t say you are going to Hell if you drink, dance, wear make-up, etc. I have never heard a bad word ever come out of his mouth…and my father says that too. He and dad are pretty close. My OTHER cousin on the other hand, I’ll call RT, is well.. another Tammy Fay and Jim Baker sort. He states to people..if you wear make-up, dance, smoke, or drink, you are going to Hell. This annoys me to no end. I don’t like make-up, so I just only wear it on occasion..I have extremely sensitive skin. I don’t smoke, but there is seriously nothing wrong with dancing or a little drinking every now and then. Even the health benefits prove that. I just don’t understand how someone that …”takes” as much as he does from his congregation can have the right to “judge” others. Such a hypocrit. Even as a kid, he’d try to push his ideals onto me.. that just alienated me even more.
My parents have never pushed religion overboard. Geez, I’m not even the same denomination as they are LOL. Not that they really like that..but they don’t complain ..much
I just feel if that many people all practice some of the sooo much similar ideals, then can that many people be wrong. I really just don’t think so. CS even told me that Hindus believed Jesus was a prophet and they teach tolerance. I really like that..esp about him
Anyway..enough of my soapbox today LOL
Ara I think we are kindred spirits SERIOUSLY. I have not met anyone who believes so close to how I believe.
Yes, you two are both really genuinely sweet e-people (hehe). You’re never snarky A-holes like myself!! Heeehhee
WHAT?!? You are NOT a skanky A-hole. Where did you get THAT crazy idea LOL. Thanks WmWB…I knew great minds really do think alike hehe
NK, just what would I do without you as a sounding board? I would just go nuts. You have totally helped me with emotional/inter-racial issues that I just did not understand due to inexperience. You have become my guru
WmWB, I think you’ll like my next post topic too. It’s got a conspiracy theory in it muhahaha. Boy, I do love the freedom of speech. The crazy thing is, I just hope it does NOT get me into trouble one day. Let me explain something. I don’t know if engineers are on the government’s watch list, but my professor of Biochemistry and the Biology of the Molecular Gene..aka Molecular Biology once told us, that if you have a biochemistry degree, you’ll ALWAYS be on the government’s watch list. We know how to do things that can be just as harmful as helpful..like yes, I really do know how to mess with bacteria and viruses and the such. Not that I would do that.. so let’s hope they never really do take away our rights of freedom of speech. I would think that professor would know what he’s talking about.. he’s the national court expert on most cases involving DNA, gene research, etc…and I’ll just leave it at that. Muhahaha
HAHAHA Ara NK wrote: “You’re never snarky A-holes”
Ara you said: “WHAT?!? You are NOT a skanky A-hole”
OMG I almost die laughing!
As for the upcoming post I will be looking forward to reading it!
I am about to do a new post myself!
snarky, skanky..I was tired.. I couldn’t read straight obviously hehehe
and didn’t catch the whole line apparently either..doh OOPs MY BAD! LOL
That’s what I get for not having enough sleep LOL…sorry everyone..I’ll do better
HAHAHAHHAHA… that is pretty funny. Skank/snark, I’ll be both. Some people are natural born pot stirrers, and that would be me
. But it’s not so much because I want to stir the pot, it’s because when you ask questions and challenge notions YOU LEARN SOMETHING!! The thing is most women tend to be pretty passive/aggressive and avoid conflict. I kind of thrive on healthy conflict and ignore personal attacks (while not spouting them off) to keep a good debate moving. I mean, it’s how you learn lots of new stuff! I’ve heard “you’re like a DUDE!” more than once
.
I tend to be really thorough in my investigations which usualy ends in revealing what is truly there. I’m pretty much an open book and very willing to challenge my assumptions and ideas on just about any topic. Not so much the case with everyone, people sometimes need to learn things in their own time. I get frustrated and forgetful of this…which I think is one reason I come across as an ass to some people.
But if you are open and willing to challenge yourself and question your assumptions then you’ll probably love my shtick!
OMG just like TWO pages to go on my 60 page thesis…I just can’t finish though. Distracted, fear of finishing or something?!! Wait until my next blog, you will LOVE it!
hi…….guys, feels like I missed out on a great post. I grew up a hind and I can tell you that there are a lot of fundamentalist Hindu’s too. Many people live in archaic traditions that dont make sense. People are bought up to in a very myopic view, the thing about religion is , it starts out good and unearthly but as time progresses it gets impure with wordy elements, it holds true for all. I believe in god very much, but I still haven’t given him a form , I feel he is ever present, but I feel my self leaning towards unorganized religion. When I was growing up my parents though very religious had a very different view my dad takes a more philosophical view, he says that one salvation by being a good man, and its upto you, not someone else judging you, i used to always question idol worship, my dad says it helps people concentrate, and I have to agree, I feel more spiritual at sanctum santorum than at a shopping mall.My mom on the other hand is very much into ‘pujas’ and though she has taught me to be secular, i see her growing more and more religous in a orthodox way.
Nice to see you back 5mile
We were worried about you LOL. How’d things go? I thought you might have run away a few extra miles.. sorry bad pun.
yeah, i’ve been running a few extra miles, but i got done before the break, so alls we’ll. I shall be writing again pretty soon. I did get your mail, but I dint reply
