To be or Not to be is the real question

{February 25, 2008}   Crazy Cat Lady

Sometimes I fear that I will become the crazy cat lady. I fear that I WILL end up all alone with just an apartment full of cats. I am naturally an animal lover. We have always had pets, usually cats, because of the pastures and woods around our home when I was growing up. At the moment, I do have a cat that lives with me. When I am feeling sad and lonely, she is there for me to snuggle up with and talk to..but although she yowls and meows a lot..she can’t talk back.

My cat Icey is a seal lynx-point Siamese mix. I took her in when she was at least 3 months old, wild, and covered with fleas. She got 3 baths that day to rid her of the fleas. She’s the perfect picture of health now and will be 4 this coming April. She is VERY perculiar though. She does not like other cats, but will tolerate dogs, probably due to growing up around my dogs at home during her kitten year. She can’t stand for any other animal to take my attention. On occasion, she just gets too rough and likes to bite and kick me like she would playing with another animal, but she loves me to death. Almost nothing better than snuggling up on a cold night with a warm, purring kitty.

She is also very protective of me around other humans she doesn’t know. With guests, she’s got to sniff your shoes first. If you check out, she MIGHT let you pet her. If she gets a bad vibe off of you, BEWARE. She will attack. I have heard that animals are a good indicator of how trustworthy people are. Luckily for me, she loves to curl up my guy’s lap. She enjoys purring and getting scratched and will bring her toys to entice play.

After much thought though, I don’t think I could stand to have more than one indoor cat. They are like children. They will bug you when you’re on the phone, can’t stand for you to close the door when you’re taking a shower, etc. So perhaps, a cat is just a good trial run for any children I may end up having one day. She has definitely taught me tolerance and patience besides unconditional love.

One thing I look for in a guy, he has to be able to get along with my cat. She is my protector and I hers. We are a team that can be added to, but not separated. CS likes playing with her, although she startles him alot. I guess that is due to cultural differences. He never had a pet, although he wanted one, growing up. So perhaps Icey will permanently adopt him one day too.

;)

Naw Ara I am sure you will not be that lady!

I also came from a family who ALWAYS had animals. In my younger years we had one-three cats and one-two dogs (and a squirrle) at a time. When I got into teen years we had the same amount of dogs but more like 7 cats. My husband was never allowed to have animals so when moved out on his own he got a cat (he is allergic to dogs). Once I moved out on my own I had two cats and one dog. I LOVED all my pets and I thought I would never tire of them….well….sigh…Having my husband complain about my dog ALL the time caused a lot of relationship issues.
I ended up giving my dog to my mother (who loves him and still has him). My husband’s cat died of a rare blood disease. One of my cats kept peeing everywhere even though she was spayed so I gave her away. That left us with one cat and that cat I had since I was 6. He died shortly after my daughter was born due to a tumor. Since then we have not gotten any more pets (2 1/2 yrs now).
I have to say that I am happier now that I do not have pet hair all over things, that I no longer have to change the litter box or take a dog for a walk. Plus now I have two children who keep me busy and both are allergic as well I have to think of them anyway but if when they are older they want an animal (hypo-allergenic) and will care for it without me having to do it then I will be fine with that….Kids can change everything!

Well, perhaps my mind will change with time too LOL. The litter box doesn’t bother me so much, but the freakin cat hair drives me NUTS. No matter how much I brush her and roll her with the lint brush, it just keeps a coming LOL. Mom’s allergic to dogs, but fortunately, she seems to never developed an allergy to our Pomeranians. They really don’t shed much though, so I think that has something to do with it. Plus we keep them groomed. During summer, all their hair gets clipped off short, which they love. It’s just too hot in Texas to have a cold-weather dog with long hair. I’ll post a picture on here sometime of them with their short hair cuts. I changed my avatar from the picture of the frog to a picture of my dad’s dog Prissy. I took it about the time she blinked. It was crazy and unintentional, but I love it. The cats at my moms all live outdoors, so they don’t bother much, but my dog Dusty drives us crazy. No matter what, we have to watch him or he will heist that leg and pee wherever. I decided after that, I would NEVER if possible have another indoor male animal, well besides human that is ;)

I’m sure you aren’t going to be crazy cat lady ara, from what little i know about you, you sound like a dream,i’m sure a lot of other guys must be interested in you.

My parents always had a no pets policy, because of the hair and the maintenance. My neighbors had golden retrievers and I would play with them often.I had a pet turtle for about a year, and then we moved and I had to return him :( . I had a white lab rat for a few months who I liked a lot, then one day the lizards ate him :( . I was really sad,I’ve grown a strong dislike even fear or lizards.I don’t see myself having a pet, though sometimes i’ve thought about having a dog,but i surely know when I have kids they would want pets and i get to indulge myself without taking the responsibility.

I think ara and 6mile should go out…. hheheh! You guys rock!

6mile says:

hmmm.. i dunno…. ara is a shy bun like me :P . I’d rather go out with someone who takes charge and leads the way, that way I don’t need to worry about what to do…. besides ara happy with CS :) , maybe i will get to play with they’re kids someday soon.

ara0062 says:

haha, you guys are funny ;)

ara0062 says:

Perhaps if things don’t work out with CS I’ll keep that in mind, but for now, my heart is content with him. We will find 6mile someone though :) We just need to get him away from that old world south in S.C. No offense, but a LOT of people there are very stuck in their ways, not to say that there aren’t some everywhere, but old world white people there still have an affinity against anyone of color at all..whether it be blue, brown, purple or black :)

6mile says:

i’ve had a lot of people down south tell that to me, and im in the south. Is it really true, even my irish family tells that a lot. *sighs*

You know ara, the more I hear all this, the more you want to marry a girl to prove them wrong, lol. Kinda like Indian parents,. the more they reject you the more you strive to gain your acceptance

ara0062 says:

I hate to say it, but it is true. I am from the south..and not what they call the Deep South. The Deep South has the most.. I guess how should I put it.. leftover hatred against people of color. It all stems from our history of slavery in the US. The northern states accepted black people as people, whereas the people of the south, esp the deep south saw them as inhuman, nothing more than animals. In fact, when people voted, each slave was only worth 2/3 a vote if I remember correctly how it worked. No it wasn’t fair or right, but a lot of older people have passed their warped views onto the younger generation. I honestly don’t “think” it’s as bad here in Texas as it is in the Deep South (Georgia, North/South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, etc.), but I could be wrong. People’s attitudes are changing, but it has just been a very slow process. People from my generation are I would like to think, a lot more tolerant, but then again, I could be wrong. Times are changing, but for the Deep South, I think it has been the slowest to revolutionize. For your sake, I just hope you find someone that makes you happy, regardless of color or looks..because that is really what it is about, someone to grow old with and make memories with, but I understand what your saying about it making your even MORE determined. :)

Take VA out of your deep south and add AL, AK, and MS.

DOH not AK that is Alaska I meant AR as in Arkansas ;)

ara0062 says:

hahaha that’s funny. I honestly have never really been sure if VA was in it or not LOL. AK ahha, yeah I know you meant Arkansas, but just to think of Alaska as the south of anything hehe is funny :)

6mile says:

guess i’m stuck in the deep south:(, haha

The funny thing is I hear people in Alaska are kind of racist against EVERYONE meaning anyone who is not Eskimo. I dunno though since I have never been there or met anyone from there.

ara0062 says:

I honestly don’t know. I have only met a few people from Alaska..it’s so far away LOL. The couple that I do know from Alaska seem very nice..well they are to me anyway. I haven’t seen them around anyone else though :)

6mile says:

I heard there are hardly any people in alaska, most are spread wide out and a few live in towns like fairbank
